SINS = SIGNS

SINS = SIGNS

When we view things in our lives, or in the lives of others, that we recognize or identify as “sins”, it is easy to feel displeasure, sadness, anger, guilt, or shame. Sins can be either thoughts, feelings, or actions. When we experience thoughts, feelings or actions that do not lead toward love and goodness, then those thoughts, feelings or actions can be considered “sins”. Because, as the original definition of the word “sin” points out, to “sin” means to “miss the mark”. When thoughts, feelings, or actions miss the mark of faith, hope and love, then it can be defined as sin.

Sins can, however, be useful to us. Instead of viewing sins with a perspective of fear, disgust, sadness, guilt or shame, we can allow God to give us wisdom and insight into how we view “sins”. By adding God, (“G”) into the perspective of “sins”, we then have the word, “siGns”. Signs are used to point us in the right direction, to advise us, or to warn us. There are signs for exits, for restrooms, businesses, for roadways, cities, and states.

Sins are merely signs. They are signs that something deeper needs some healing, attention and adjusting. Just as if a person were “missing the mark” in archery, or while shooting a gun at a target, if we notice that we, or someone we know, are missing the mark then we can use our observation of that “sin” as a “sign”; to evaluate how far we missed the mark, and why. This can lead us to improving our attempts at hitting the mark of Love.

Don’t get too focused on the “sins''. When you notice sins, do not allow fear, guilt, sadness, shame, or anger to overcome you. Sins are signs. Bring God into your observation of the sin, and discover what the signs are saying. God is Love, and we should always be aiming toward Love.
